Introduction
There's a whole lot of space out there. An infinity of it. And there are a whole lot of space games to fill it. (Well, not really, as it's infinity and they're comprised of indefinitely-large data, and even if they were physical they're finite - but it's a metaphor, y'know?)
And they've been around for ever. Elite, one of the first and best space exploration games, was released in 1984. For a generation, games like X-Wing versus Tie-Fighter, Starcraft and the Mark Hamill vehicle Wing Commander carried fans along happily.
They slumped - heavily - in the 2000s and there were questions back then whether space games would ever be big again - but the indie revolution has shot them back into orbit. We've picked out our favourite ten of the current class - tell us what we've missed in the comments.

Do you like feeling small and insignificant? Then play SpaceEngine, which features, incredibly, the entire universe. Or at least the bit we know about. Focus on Earth, then pull back at top speed, and you suddenly become aware of how youâre on a tiny speck of dust hurtling through an endless void. The tech is remarkable, allowing you to travel effortlessly between galaxies and land on planets. But besides exploring, there isnât much else to it.
Play an arcade space shooter game, and pilot a high-speed mini spacecraft through 30 dangerous maze levels filled with enemy-spawning portals, harmful outer walls, and many more treacherous hindrances! Underrun is a challenging, space invader-style, flying skill and shooting game where you must safely guide a speedy spaceship through narrow mazes toward an Exit Portal. In each of the 30 progressively-tricky levels, you need to dodge and weave around enemy rockets, fire your own missiles back, collect power-ups, and exhibit some top-class piloting skills!
Skills required: This classic-style arcade action game requires excellent timing skills in mastering the keyboard-based control of your spacecraft. Sharp reactions, observation and anticipation skills are vital. Maze puzzle solving determination is also key. The rocket-fueled, momentum-based movement of your spaceship can take some time to get used to, so trial and error and patience definitely play a part in your success.
How to Play: A Flash-based, multi-level arcade / space invaders-style skill game for notebook, laptop and desktop PC / Mac (with certain browsers). When the game loads, click on the âStart Gameâ icon at the bottom of the play area to reach the main menu screen. In each of the 30 increasingly-difficult levels, your task is to maneuver your spacecraft safely to the Exit Portal.
Control your spaceship's movement using the WASD Keys or the Arrow Keys on your computer keyboard. Press your C Key to fire your missiles, and X Key to deploy a power up (You can collect power ups from the âspawnersâ that appear in some levels). Avoid contact with the red maze walls â these harm your spaceship and deplete your Health Bar in the bottom right corner of the play area. Likewise, enemy rocket ships also try to impede your journey to the Exit Portal. Destroy these with your missiles, or keep well away from them if you want to avoid a tough battle!
If this Flash-based game no longer works on IE11 on your PC / MAC, try playing on Chrome or Firefox browser.
