I’ve tried to be as thorough as possible. This guide aims to get a brand new player to level 60 in 12 hours and or less. This also includes any unfortunate events such as death, player interaction and or resource availability. So don’t worry if you fall off a cliff and forget to put down a bed, this is all planned.
If you find this article useful, please check out my Interactive Conan Exiles Map.
Please Note:
Levels 1 to ~20
Watch the video, it shows you can complete levels 1-20 in around 30-45 minutes by completing all of the easy Journey Steps. I was able to get to level 22 in under 40 minutes using this guide.
You can also get this faster or get to a higher level if you aim for the optional Journey steps for this stage; these are:
To complete these at this stage requires other players to have these items available. Don’t worry if you can’t because you’ll have plenty of time to do these yourself later on.
Leveling Route Map
Once you arrive at The Sentinals this is the route you will want to take through the desert.
Level 1
You’ve just created your character and entered the game, there are 4 things you need to do straight away:
Next, in this area there is always a rock with a water bottle on, find it, pick it up and drink from it for the Drink Journey step.
Start putting Attributes into Vitality until you have 10.
As you make your way to the Newbie river, you must pick up, craft and learn feats.
With this being said, we’re going to start working on the following Journey steps and have them completed before reaching the river:
Once you reach level 5 and should Learn the following Feats:
![]()
Make the Stone Sword and Stone Club – You will get to level 6 and learn the Feat, Skirmisher, make Stone Daggers and a Stone Spear.
Keep picking up Plant Fibre and branches as you run towards the river.
As you reach the first set of trees start farming them with your Pick to gain the Bark Journey step – Now make a Wooden Shield with the wood and venture towards the river. You will want to find a Shaleback.
Find a Shaleback
We currently have a Wooden shield, Stone Sword, Stone Club, Stone Daggers and a Stone Spear in our hot bar. With this one Shaleback we will get the following Journey Steps:
Harvest the Shaleback with your Stone Axe for Savoury Flesh, if you didn’t get it this time, kill another. Create a Campfire and Fiber Bedroll, put both on the ground and cook the Savoury Flesh and eat the Grilled Steak.
You should now be level 11 – Increase your Vitality to 10 and put the remainder in Encumbrance and Grit.
You now need to run towards The Sentinels which is roughly in the middle of the River. Along the way find an Exiled Camp. These are Exiled Thralls gathered around a bonfire for Scout an Exile Camp. Arrive at The Sentinels and speak to Arcos the Wanderer for Find Somebody to Talk to.
In addition to this, crouch and try to get under his tents for the Find Shelter journey step.
From the Tower of Bats and to the Jungle
The next few steps require a bit of everything. Run, climb and fight you way through the next few stages, the aim is to be level 20+ by the time you’re in the jungle.
What’s important about this stage is speed. You need to run through camps and loot chests to gain some Journey Steps. Just walk up to the chest, open it and press the Loot All button – Don’t stop to look at whats in it, do that at a safer point. These are the Journey Steps you’re wanting to complete this way:
In addition to this, if you’re starting on a server with people already established, you could potentially pick up the optional Journey steps I mentioned in the beginning.
It’s not essential you complete these during your run because you can do this in the build phase. However it will certainly help.
From The Sentinels run directly up towards the middle of the desert. When you reach the top of the hill mine the Iron Stone nodes for Mine All the Iron in a Node. Run towards Tower of Bats and scout the Darfari Camp at the base of the mountain.
Run around the side of the Tower as shown in the video and climb half way up to gain the Journey Climb the Tower of Bats.
Run directly north, across the river towards the closest entrance to the Unnamed City for Visit the Unnamed City. As soon as you get the Journey, do a U-turn towards the closest Dogs of the Desert camp (near the black hand) for that scout Journey.
Run East, towards The Sinkhole and attune yourself to the obelisk. Run North East towards the Scoundrel’s Getaway for Scout a Black Hand Camp. Run through the camp and loot any chests you see. From here, run into the Black Galleon and loot the Chests you find. This step sounds pretty crazy but you can do it without dying.
There are at least 4 chests you can get, one at the very top next to where the tanner thrall spawns. One in the room right below this and the other two are in the very bottom of the galleon.
From here, fight you way towards the jungle and onto the build phase.
The Jungle & The Build Phase Levels 21 to ~35
The jungle is an excellent location to level in. Creatures are relatively easy to kill and provide excellent exp. Try and find a place were there are plenty of birds and lizards in the area, to call home (as shown at the end of the 1-20 video.)
The other reason why the jungle is a prime location for fast levels is because you’re going to need a lot of tar. The majority of experience gained after level 40 will be from creating explosive jars and traps. To do this, your supply of tar must meet the demand of the amount of explosives you’re going to make! But I’ll explain that later in the article.
The main goal is to make a small efficient base with each of the main work stations; Blacksmith Bench, Furnace, x2+ Firebowls, x2+ Tannery, Carpenters Bench, Armourers Bench, Fluid Press and a Fire.
These are the next set of Journey Steps you will want to complete:
The Build Phase
Once you have a shell of a base you need to fill it with work stations.
A really important piece of advice is any time you have downtime ( i.e. when you’re waiting for iron bars in the furnace) run around the near areas, kills creatures and farm hide. This should be a non-stop pursuit of gaining experience.
Once you’ve completed the above Journey Steps, have light armour and fully equipped with iron weapons and tools, it’s time to grind the remaining levels to level 34. Make sure you farm as much reptile hide as possible.
Farm stacks and stacks of Reptile Hide
I mentioned one of the other reasons why the Jungle is the prime location to level is because it’s a great source of tar. Tar is extremely important for levels 34-60 as you’re going to make a lot of steelfire which you need to make explosives.
The easiest way to get tar is having stacks and stacks of reptile hide. When you put the reptile hide in the tannery (with plenty of bark, of course.) you get 1 tar for each hide. Reptiles (crocodiles, lizards and salamanders) are much easier to kill and farm than tigers etc (which also give you the same 1:1 ratio.) So it makes sense you farm these guys into oblivion.
Explosive Jars and Traps, Levels 35-60
Making explosive jars is pretty simple, you need steelfire, demon blood, crystal and brimstone to make dragonpowder. Then use an Artisan Table to make Jars. Combining the two with 5 tar will make you one Explosive Jar.
When crafted, Explosive Jars provide over 100k experience and the Explosive traps provide a further 400k experience… yes 400k! This means it will only take around 30 Explosive Jars to turn into Explosive Traps to give you enough experience to get to level 60.
The time sink is getting enough steelfire to craft the explosives, which again is the reason why I suggest farming as much reptile hide as possible.
Brimstone is the easy ingredient of steelfire and one or two farming runs of several locations will provide you with more than enough. The issue is having enough Tar, which is why you’re going to be non-stop farming hide and putting them through your tannerys to get it.
Before this, however, we need to make sufficient stashes of the following materials:
Brimstone
You can farm sufficient amounts of Brimstone by visiting several locations. The ideal amount of brimstone needed for this stage is around 6000. To get this, you need to be able to farm, Death Whisper Ruins, Gallmans Tomb, and the Sinners Refuge twice without any other player interaction so you have all the brimstone spawns to yourself.
Bark
Bark is important because it’s the fuel for the tannery to turn reptile hide into leather and tar. The easiest way of getting bark is by using a pick on dried out trees. North of the Black Galleon are plenty of these trees that you can farm for bark. I recommend doing a full sweep of this area and carry back as much bark as your character can carry.
Crystal
One sweep of an untouched crystal cave is enough for your bomb making endeavours. Try and aim to bring back around 2500 crystal. Remember to harvest crystals with your pick, it provides sufficiently more than just picking it up!
Demon Blood
Demon Blood comes from harvesting, well Demons, and you don’t need to go into the Unnamed City to get it. Harvesting Imps, Undead Hyenas (around the Sink Hole) and the Rock Nose Boss (south east of the Black Galleon) all provide you with the glorious red stuff.
Onward to Level 60
Now you have a generous supply of everything needed to create Dragonpowder and Explosive Jars. To do this as fast as possible you need to make steelfire quickly. The easiest way to do this is having 5+ Tannerys making Tar and 5+ Firebowls making the steelfire.
Once you’ve made several explosive jars, create a dismantling bench. This allows you to put the Explosive Jar into the bench and you can get back your dragonpowder to re-create more Jars.
You already have the brimstone so it’s really just the case of farming reptiles for hide and making sure your tannerys are constantly producing Tar. Move the tar into the Firebowls and when you have enough steelfire, make dragonpowder and then the bombs.
Rinse and repeat this until you’re level 60.

Conan Exiles can be pretty confusing when you’re starting out, but one way the game teaches you how to play is to present you with a series of Journey Steps to be completed. A list of three Journey Steps will be displayed on the top right of your screen and as each one is ticked off it will be replaced by a new one. There are 100 steps in total divided between 10 Chapters.
The first 20 steps of Chapters I and II are pretty easy, and completing them will help you level up quickly. Below are notes on how to complete all the Journey Steps in the first two chapters, with a few extra from Chapter III thrown in for luck. The instructions are for PS4, but should be easily translatable for XBox and PC.
At the beginning of the game (after the character creation) you’ll be dumped in the Southern Desert at one of the Broken Highway locations (there are six of these, all pretty similar). Stay in this area to complete the first three steps, then head north towards the river (on the PS4 the right-hand directional button will call up the map). The river is where the fun really starts.
Adventurer wanted - previous applicants need not apply.
The Journey Steps: Chapter I1.1. Climb
Climb any surface - literally any large rock, cliff-side, ruined building or stone slab. Near your starting point on the Broken Highway you’ll see a large upright slab with writing on it. Go up to it and press ‘square’ to interact. The slab starts talking to you (which completes step 1.8). Then walk up to the slab and press ‘X’ to climb it.
1.2. Drink
There’s a waterskin lying on a boulder a few steps away from your starting point (don’t miss it, it’s useful) pick it up by pressing 'square' and it should go into your wheel-menu (or radial menu, if you want to get fancy about it). Press L1 to bring up this menu, then select the waterskin to drink. If you miss the waterskin, do this step at the river. Stand or swim in deep water and press 'square' to interact with it.
1.3. Eat
Run into any of the bushes you come across and use ‘square’ to harvest plant fibre, seeds and insects. The insects should go into your wheel-menu. Interact with the bugs to eat them.
1.4. Use a bed or bedroll
Use some of the plant fibre you collected in step 1.3 to make twine, then pick up branches from the ground (walk over them and press ‘square’), and collect more fibre (if needed) to make a bedroll. These materials will end up in your Inventory. Press the central pad to access the Inventory and you'll see a list of crafting recipes to the right of the screen. The bedroll will be one of them. Once made, the bedroll should end up in your wheel-menu. Place it on any area of flat ground to complete this step. It might be best to place it somewhere safe when you get nearer the river. If you die you'll be given the choice of re-spawning at this bedroll or back at the Broken Highway.
1.5. Clothe yourself
Use more harvested fibre to create a tunic, trousers, hand-wraps and shoes (all found in the Inventory recipe list). Once they’re made they’ll automatically appear on your body.
1.6. Slay
Gather up branches and pieces of stone (five of each) to make a hatchet, then do the same to make a pick. These are harvesting tools, but each can be used as a weapon. The easiest things to kill at this stage are baby Shalebacks (these look like beefed-up turtles the size of a dog), rabbits, and imps (squat, man-like creatures). You’ll encounter all of these by the river. A light attack is R1, a heavy attack is R2. Once you’ve killed something, keep hacking its corpse to harvest its body parts. Make sure you get some feral flesh from one of these creatures. You’ll need it later for 2.3.
Imps, what they lack in social skills they make up for in feral flesh.
1.7. Craft a tool
You did this in step 1.6.
1.8. Find signs of intelligent life
You did this in step 1.1.
1.9. Kick
Put away any weapon or tool you might be carrying and press ‘L2’. It’s that easy.
1.10. Dodge
Press the ‘O’ button. Again, very easy.
And that's the end of Chapter I.
Yikes. Defeating this thing is actually another Journey Step (5.2).
Chapter II Steps
2.1. Spend Knowledge Points
Press the central pad to get to your Inventory, then use R2 to cycle to Attributes and then Feats. The game gives you recipe points each time you level up and here’s where you spend them. The Feats menu lists all the recipes you can buy. Some will be locked until you get to the right level; others will have three dots on their icon to show they’re available to buy. Essential first purchases are Primitive Cook, Warrior and Apprentice Mason.
2.2. Get a dedicated weapon
Buy the Warrior recipe (see step 2.1) and make a Stone Sword out of stones and branches.
2.3. Eat a filling meal
You can just about survive on insects and berries, but you’ll soon be starving if you don’t eat properly. Feral flesh (see step 1.6) makes a good meal, but will give you food poisoning if you don’t cook it first. To do this, buy the recipe for Primitive Cook (see step 2.1) and make a camp fire - your first crafting station. Once the fire is placed on the ground, harvest some wood (whack a tree with an hatchet or pick) then place the wood and feral flesh into the fire. Press L2 to get it going, or stop it again. Once the feral flesh has changed to ‘shredded roast’, you can press 'square' to interact with it and eat it.
Cooking for one (you can also make a gruel by cooking fibre and seeds together - better than nothing)
2.4. Find shelter
You can either run into a cave (which is likely to be full of imps) or make a shelter. Buy the recipe for Apprentice Mason (see step 2.1) and make yourself a house. The smallest house you can build has a single Sandstone Foundation, three Sandstone Walls, a Sandstone Doorframe, a Simple Wooden Door, and a Sandstone Ceiling. This step usually completes once the building is half-finished. Building a small shack like this will also complete step 2.9.
2.5. Perform a 'Heavy Finisher' with a weapon
With your Stone Sword (from step 2.2) try a combination of heavy attacks (pressing R2). The sequence of blows will end with a Heavy Finisher.
2.6. Use a Torch
Create an Improvised Torch. Add it to your wheel-menu (if that's not already happened automatically) then select it. To add things to your wheel-menu. Go to your Inventory and highlight the object you want move, then press L2 to bring up the wheel-menu. Select the menu slot you want to use and press X to confirm. If you choose a menu slot that already has something in it, that item will transfer to the Inventory.
2.7. Scout an Exile Camp
There are lots of camp-fires along the river with two or three NPCs gathered around them. Just get close enough to trigger this step, then run away if you don’t want to fight.
2.8. Store goods
Buy the Boxmaker recipe (see step 2.1) and make a box from wood and twine. Then place the box on the ground, or in your house, and put something (anything) in it.
2.9. Create a home
You did this in step 2.4.
2.10. Block an attack
This one requires a bit more effort. Buy the Defender recipe, then make a wooden shield. Find an NPC to aggro and, when they attack, press L2 to raise your shield to block them. This can take a few tries.
So that’s the first 20 Journey Steps of Chapters I and II done, most of the remaining steps require more work and the use of more crafting stations. However, the following are some Chapter III Steps you should also be able to complete early on.
Chapter III - Odds and Ends3.3. Scout a Darfari camp
The NPCs you’ll find near the river are not members of tribes. The tribal camps are usually much larger and more dangerous. If you explore the west of the river, you’ll soon find a location called the ShatteredBridge. Follow this to the north bank of the river and you’ll come to an area called Shaman’s Rise. Look for a small camp next to a cliff-face and you’ll find Nunu the Cannibal (who’s much nicer than he sounds). Nunu willl teach you the Yog religion (talking to him completes step 3.5). High above Nunu’s shrine is a Darfari Camp called Howling Plateau. It’s a steep climb, but you’ll make it. You only need to get close enough to complete this scouting mission, then run off if you want to.
Nice Guy Nunu (but don't accept dinner invitations - I’m joking he won’t invite you to anything)
3.4. Obtain an iron bar
These are hard to make until you find iron ore nodes (these are further to the north), but if you attack a large NPC camp (like the one you find in step 3.3) anyone you kill is likely to drop something useful. Sometimes they drop iron bars. These Tribal camps usually have a few boxes lying around the place and these are often full of goodies too.
3.5. Find somebody to talk to
You did this in step 3.3.
3.6. Shoot an enemy
Buy the Archer recipe and make some simple Flinthead arrows. Then shoot an enemy (you can't just shoot at them though, you have to hit them).
3.8. Get a Head
If you're lucky, you might have already completed this one. To get a head you have to chop up an animal with a hatchet. However, only large adult animals drop heads, and many only rarely. For a guaranteed head, find a Kudu antelope on the north side of the river (these are the large male antelopes with twisted horns). The Kudu will put up a fight, but a head is virtually a certainty once you give it the chop. However, heads aren't much use to you at the moment, and they weight a ton, so don't bother keeping it.
Get a head with a Kudu (a tough fight for a beginner, but do-able)
3.9. Throw an Orb
These are complicated to make, but you might find one on a dead enemy or in a camp loot box (see step 3.4). If you find an orb, equip it like a weapon, then find an enemy to lob it at (press R2).
3.10. Use a pick to gather bark from trees
Easy peasy. Just hack at a tree with a pick. Bark is very useful for tanning and drying food, so don’t throw it away.
Once you know what the easier steps are, burning through them takes no time at all, and by doing them and discovering new locations it's quite possible to reach Level 20 in as many minutes.
